Ethan pulled the horses to a stop, grateful his limbs responded to his command. How he could think or act or move when only Clara’s heart-wrenching question filled his mind, he didn’t know. God’s grace carried him, certainly.

He could hear it still—her thin voice, so heavy with pain it sounded as if it were ready to crack. Why did you leave?

Oceans crashed on him, holding him down. Struggling to inhale without strain, he tossed a look over his shoulder. “I’ll see about a room.”

Pressing all his strength into his legs, he hopped from the wagon seat and marched to where Edmond tied his horse. She thought he hadn’t loved her? Dearest Lord, that was a pain he could not endure for long. He must find a way to tell her, but from the look on her face, she wished to have nothing to do with him. The possibility that she might find someone else to take her the rest of the way to Boston filled his bones with iron-heavy dread.

He’d had his chance and shot it through the heart. Waves of self-directed rage rolled up and down his spine as he walked across the yard.

“Are you ill?” Edmond took him by the shoulder and spun him around. “You look positively white.”

Ethan heaved a silent exhale. He had no intention whatsoever of speaking of it to Edmond or anyone else.

“What about the wagon?” Edmond gestured with a nod. “Do you wish to—”

“Not right away.” One hand on his hip, he twisted back, motioning to the inn and doing his best to pretend he hadn’t just been verbally whipped. “Clara . . . Clara should like a chance to rest as soon as possible.”

“Of course.” With a shake of the head, Edmond grinned, apparently accepting that Ethan wished to be left alone with his troubles. “Follow me, and I shall introduce you to my friends.”

As they walked the small distance to the entrance, Ethan studied the two-story establishment. Meticulously maintained, the gardens were a sight to behold, to say nothing of the freshly painted siding and welcoming red door.

Once inside, Ethan gave in to habit and took stock of the crowd. Mostly men of middling class on the road for business, a few families. Any angst he’d held in reserve dissipated with the homey scent of spices and fresh bread that rushed to greet him. With the war all but over, it seemed there was little reason to harbor the same tensions he’d carried for so long. Besides, Edmond was as good a soldier as any. If this place were not reputable, he would never have brought them here.

Leaning toward Ethan’s ear, Edmond spoke as he, too, scanned the tavern patrons. “Oliver and Amelia Mulligan have owned this place for fifteen years at least. I first met them when they—aw, there you are!” Edmond’s face split in a smile as he waved.

A short, balding man grinned from his place beside a table across the room and nodded in acknowledgment. He excused himself
